Tallahassee, Oct 27: A 15-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with a shooting near Florida A&M University’s Bragg Memorial Stadium that injured 12 people over the weekend, police said.

The Tallahassee Police Department said detectives arrested the teenager on Sunday. He faces 11 counts of attempted second-degree murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a delinquent.

“What should have been a weekend of celebration in our community instead became a night of fear and violence for the victims and their families,” Police Chief Lawrence Revell said.

The shooting occurred around 8 pm on Saturday near Perry and Manatee streets, close to the stadium, where homecoming celebrations included a football game.

The 12 injured people included minors. One person also suffered an ankle injury while fleeing the gunfire, police said.

Following the incident, Florida A&M University urged members of its campus community to stay away from the area. The university described the shooting as having occurred near campus and said the campus itself remained safe.

“Our hearts are with the victims and everyone affected by tonight’s incident on Perry Street,” the university said.

Police said preliminary findings indicated that a physical altercation took place before shots were fired and that the incident stemmed from a dispute between individuals known to one another. Investigators believe none of the victims appeared to have been the intended targets.

Revell said the arrest was a significant step, but the investigation was continuing. Police added that further arrests were possible.
