Mainpuri, Oct 20: A 48-year-old man was arrested for allegedly shooting his 19-year-old daughter in the head while she was asleep after she refused to marry a man chosen by him and insisted on marrying the person she loved, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place on Monday in Bhongaon town of Uttar Pradesh's Mainpuri district. The victim, identified as Shazia, sustained critical injuries and was initially taken to the district hospital before being referred to Saifai Medical College, where she is undergoing treatment.

According to Superintendent of Police (City) Arun Kumar Singh, Shazia was in a relationship with a man she wanted to marry. However, her father, Asin Khan, a labourer, had arranged her marriage to another man for November 19.

When Shazia refused to accept her father's choice and insisted on marrying her partner, Khan allegedly shot her in the head while she was asleep, the officer said.

Hearing the gunshot, Shazia's mother, Kherunisha, rushed to the room and took her injured daughter to the district hospital. She was later referred to Saifai Medical College for further treatment.

Kherunisha subsequently lodged a first information report (FIR) against her husband, accusing him of attempting to murder their daughter.

Police said Khan was arrested while allegedly on his way to the Bhongaon police station after the shooting. Further investigation is underway.
