Naravi commemorates centenary of missionary Fr Faustine Corti; renovated presbytery inaugurated

Mangaluru, Oct 9: The centenary of the death of venerable missionary Fr Faustine Corti, SJ, was commemorated with deep spiritual devotion and gratitude at St Antony Church, Naravi, on Sunday, August 9. The occasion was marked by a solemn Thanksgiving Eucharistic Celebration and the blessing and inauguration of the newly renovated historic presbytery associated with the pioneering missionary.

Solemn Eucharistic Celebration

Most Rev. Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Mangalore, presided over the solemn Eucharistic celebration. Fr Walter D’Mello, Vicar Vara of the Belthangady Deanery, concelebrated the Mass along with 21 other visiting and resident priests from the diocese and the Jesuit congregation.

In his homily, Bishop Emeritus Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza highlighted the selfless missionary zeal, dedication and tireless social service of Fr Faustine Corti. Recalling the legacy of the Swiss Jesuit missionary, historically revered as Mansere Guru in Naravi for his service to marginalized communities and his efforts to restore their human dignity, the Bishop encouraged the faithful to follow his example of sacrifice, compassion and unwavering faith.

Benefactors and Patrons Honoured

Before the commencement of the Holy Mass, a felicitation ceremony was held to honour the benefactors and donors who generously supported the renovation of the historic presbytery.

Sumantha D’Souza, secretary of the Parish Pastoral Council, read out the names of the donors, who were presented with mementos in appreciation of their valuable contributions. Philanthropist Michael D’Souza, who made a substantial contribution towards the renovation, was represented by Steevan, who received the honour on his behalf.

Fr Prashanth Madtha, SJ, was specially felicitated at the conclusion of the celebration in recognition of the generous financial support extended by the Karnataka Jesuit Province.

Bishop Emeritus Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza commended the parish priest, Fr Jerome D’Souza, Fr Rupesh Tauro, lecturer and priest at St Antony PU College, Naravi, and the entire parish community for their dedicated efforts in preserving the historic and spiritual heritage associated with Fr Faustine Corti.

Historic Presbytery Blessed and Inaugurated

Following the eucharistic celebration, the clergy and faithful proceeded in procession to the renovated historic presbytery associated with Fr Faustine Corti.

Fr Prashanth Madtha, SJ, formally inaugurated the renovated building by cutting the commemorative ribbon. Bishop Emeritus Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza then led the prayer of dedication and solemnly blessed the premises with holy water in the presence of the concelebrating priests and the faithful.

The restoration of the presbytery marks an important step in preserving the historical and spiritual legacy of Fr Faustine Corti, whose missionary service continues to inspire generations of people in Naravi and beyond.

Community Participation and Fellowship

The centenary celebration witnessed the participation of more than a thousand devotees and well-wishers from Naravi and neighbouring parishes. The arrangements and coordination for the event were supervised by Sanjay Miranda, vice president of the Parish Pastoral Council, with the assistance of parish committee members and volunteers.

The commemorative event concluded with a community lunch, bringing together clergy, parishioners, devotees and well-wishers in a spirit of unity, gratitude and fellowship.
