Panaji, Sep 28: Nearly the entire Porvorim stretch had been identified as three black spots by the Porvorim police and traffic cell, with 238 accidents reported between 2022 and 2024, resulting in 22 deaths and 11 grievous injuries.
Official records show that the six-lane elevated corridor was being constructed to address the accident-prone sections and improve road safety. The accident figures have gained renewed attention after two more fatalities were reported shortly after the flyover was opened to traffic on September 11.
Data shows that the NH-66 stretch between Wadakade and O-Coqueiro restaurant recorded 94 accidents between 2022 and 2024. Of these, 10 were classified as serious crashes, resulting in four deaths, five grievous injuries and one minor injury.
The second black spot, stretching from Mall de Goa to Hero Circle, recorded 62 accidents during the three-year period. It was the deadliest of the three stretches, with 13 fatalities, three grievous injuries and one minor injury.
The stretch between Tiklo petrol pump and Damian de Goa recorded 82 accidents in 2023 and 2024, leading to its classification as a black spot. Five people were killed, while three suffered grievous injuries and five sustained minor injuries.
Over the past three years, the state has implemented road safety measures on 22 problematic stretches in North Goa, comprising 16 black spots and six accident-prone zones.
In South Goa, safety measures were taken on 21 stretches, including 14 black spots and seven accident-prone zones.
State data shows that no other road stretch in Goa recorded as many deaths over a three-year period as Porvorim.
Officials said signage is being prepared for installation following the recent fatalities. Once the signage work is completed, the entry and exit points that were closed after last month's fatal accident will be reopened.
The next deadliest stretch was at Dhargalim, where nine people were killed over three years. A flyover is currently under construction at the location to address the identified black spot.
