Patna, Sep 19: A 25-year-old pregnant woman died while undergoing treatment at a private clinic in Narkatiaganj, West Champaran, on Saturday, triggering protests by her family members and local residents who alleged medical negligence.
The deceased was identified as Salma Khatoon, wife of Reyaz Ahmed and a resident of Ghodpakdi village under Inarwa police station.
According to her family, Salma was around five months pregnant when they were informed that the foetus had died in the womb. She was subsequently admitted to Shukla Clinic in Purani Bazar for removal of the foetus.
The family said they initially agreed to a D&C (dilation and curettage) procedure, for which the cost was fixed at Rs 14,000. They had reportedly deposited Rs 11,000.
However, relatives alleged that the attending doctor later advised against the procedure, saying it could be unsafe, and instead recommended surgery. The family claimed they were then asked to pay Rs 25,000 for the operation.
After giving consent, the family said Salma was taken for surgery. Her condition reportedly deteriorated during the procedure, following which she died.
The relatives further alleged that after Salma's death, the clinic management suggested that her body be taken away in an ambulance instead of addressing the circumstances surrounding her death. They also claimed that the clinic operator and staff fled the premises.
The woman's death triggered anger among her family members and local residents, who gathered outside the clinic and demanded action against those responsible.
Police and a Dial 112 emergency response team reached the spot and brought the situation under control. Officials collected details from the family and others present at the clinic.
Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Salma's death and the allegations of negligence against the clinic management.
Dr Sanjeev Kumar, Deputy Superintendent in charge of the Sub-divisional Hospital, said authorities had been informed and that appropriate action would be taken as per rules after completion of the investigation.
