Tehran, Sep 20: Iran has said that Pakistan did not convey any specific message or proposal from the United States during Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s recent visit to Tehran, according to reports.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry said Naqvi’s visit focused on bilateral relations between Iran and Pakistan and on following up on existing agreements and understandings reached at the leadership level.

Tehran also said relations between the two countries were strengthening across various areas and acknowledged Pakistan’s role in regional diplomatic efforts amid heightened tensions.

The development comes against the backdrop of Pakistan’s earlier diplomatic engagement with Iran over the conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

Reuters had reported in August that Pakistan and Iran had made significant progress in talks focused on the US-Israeli war involving Iran and possible ways towards peace. Naqvi had visited Tehran along with Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir.

According to the report, discussions centred on measures to prevent further escalation, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and bringing about an expedited end to the conflict. A statement from the Pakistani military said the two sides also discussed regional peace and ways to reach a negotiated settlement.

Naqvi said Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had shared his government’s perspective candidly and described the discussions as constructive.

The report also said Munir had spoken with US President Donald Trump before his visit to Tehran. At the time, Trump had warned of economic consequences for countries providing assistance to Iran, while Tehran had threatened to shut down oil exports from the Gulf.
