New Delhi, Sep 17: Indian cricket is set for a packed five-week period, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) deploying players across the Asian Games, the West Indies series, the India A programme and the Irani Cup.

As many as 69 cricketers are expected to be involved across 15 venues between September 22 and October 17. The unusual feature of the schedule is not merely the number of matches, but the manner in which the BCCI has divided its resources across different formats and assignments.

A senior ODI side featuring Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will take on the West Indies, while Shreyas Iyer will lead the T20I side. India will also send a strong group of established T20 internationals to the Asian Games, while separate India A squads will play Australia A in multi-day and 50-over cricket. The Rest of India side will face Ranji Trophy champions Jammu & Kashmir in the Irani Cup.

The Asian Games squad is among the most notable selections. Rather than sending a second-string side, India has opted for a group containing several established T20 internationals. Iyer will lead the team, with Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah among the prominent names. Teenage batting prospect Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is also included.

India will play Japan in a T20I on September 22 before entering the men's Asian Games tournament at the quarter-final stage on September 28. The limited number of matches means the selectors can use the assignment to give a strong T20 group competitive cricket together.

The Asian Games will also provide a first Games appearance for several players, including Iyer, Bumrah, Ishan Kishan, Samson and Abhishek Sharma. Five members of India's gold-medal-winning Hangzhou squad are also returning.

The West Indies ODI series has a different selection purpose. Shubman Gill will captain India, with KL Rahul as vice-captain, while Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli return to the ODI setup. Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav add further international experience.

At the same time, the selectors have expanded the ODI pool by including Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel, along with newer options such as Gurnoor Brar, Auqib Nabi and Naman Dhir. Nabi and Dhir have received maiden ODI call-ups.

The three ODIs will be played in Thiruvananthapuram on September 27, Guwahati on September 30 and New Chandigarh on October 3.

The five-match T20I series against the West Indies will again be led by Iyer. Abhishek, Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan, Samson, Tilak, Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar, Washington, Bishnoi, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav and Mayank Yadav are also part of the squad.

The T20I selection provides multiple options in several departments, including wicketkeeping, spin, pace and all-rounders. The presence of Sooryavanshi alongside established international players also gives the teenage batter another senior-level opportunity.

The West Indies T20Is will begin in Lucknow on October 6, followed by matches in Ranchi on October 9, Indore on October 11, Hyderabad on October 14 and Bengaluru on October 17.

Meanwhile, India A will provide another pathway for players seeking to break into the senior setup. The Australia A programme has been divided into multi-day and one-day squads, allowing selectors to assess players according to different formats.

Devdutt Padikkal will captain the multi-day side, with Sai Sudharsan as vice-captain. Aman Mokhade, Ayush Pandey, Yash Rathod, Shaik Rasheed, Kumar Kushagra, Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian, Tushar Deshpande, Anshul Kamboj, Praful Hinge, N Jagadeesan, Nachiket Bhute and V Vyshak are also included.

The India A one-day squad features Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devdutt Padikkal, Priyansh Arya, Sai Sudharsan, Rajat Patidar, Kumar Kushagra, Nishant Sindhu, Vipraj Nigam, Arshin Kulkarni, Arshad Khan, Naman Dhir, Hardik Pandya, Prabhsimran Singh, Gurjapneet Singh and Yash Thakur. Pandya's participation is subject to fitness clearance.

The two multi-day matches against Australia A are scheduled in Puducherry from September 22 to 25 and September 29 to October 2, while the one-day matches will be played on October 6, 9 and 11.

The Irani Cup will provide domestic performers with another major opportunity. Rest of India, captained by Rishabh Pant with Sarfaraz Khan as vice-captain, will face Ranji Trophy champions Jammu & Kashmir in Srinagar from October 1 to 5.

The Rest of India squad also includes Sanat Sangwan, Shikhar Mohan, Sudip Gharami, Smaran Ravichandran, Manav Suthar, Saransh Jain, Akash Deep, Mukesh Kumar, Mukesh Choudhary, Aryan Juyal, Aryan Pandey, Anukul Roy and Ayush Doseja.

The simultaneous assignments give the selectors several sources of information about India's playing depth. While established players will be tested in international cricket, emerging cricketers will have opportunities in the Asian Games, India A programme and Irani Cup.

The packed schedule also allows the BCCI to assess players separately across red-ball, ODI and T20 cricket, with performances in each competition providing another route into India's future squads.
