Mira Road, Sep 15: Alert policing and a rapid late-night response averted a major tragedy near Mumbai after two beat marshals rescued a distressed 28-year-old delivery worker, his wife, and their two young daughters—aged one and two—from a potential suicide attempt on Fountain Bridge.

The incident unfolded in the early hours of Monday. At approximately 1:58 am, the Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar police control room received an urgent alert and immediately notified the Kashigaon police station. Versova beat marshal No. 4, comprising police havaldar Kokre and police constable Mohite, rushed to the area. Within minutes of patrolling the bridge and its surroundings, the officers located the family at around 2:18 am and safely took them into custody.

Financial Strain and Family Dispute

Investigations revealed that the man, a resident of Shanti Park in Mira Road East, was buckling under heavy financial pressure. A few months prior, he had borrowed around Rs 3.5 lakh from his sister after pledging gold. As his financial situation deteriorated, his sister repeatedly urged him to redeem the gold, sell it, and return the remaining balance. The mounting monetary strain and the ensuing family dispute deeply distressed him, driving him to the brink of the extreme step with his wife and children.

Following the rescue, the police provided professional counselling to the couple and summoned the man's brother and sister to address the underlying issues. Authorities strongly urged the family members to resolve their disputes amicably rather than resort to drastic measures.

“The moment we received the information, the beat marshals were alerted and they immediately rushed to the spot. Their timely intervention helped avert a major tragedy. The family was subsequently counselled,” said PSI Harish Patil.
