Mangaluru, Sep 8: The postgraduate student induction and orientation programme 2026, “Navyarambh,” was inaugurated on September 7 at the YMK Auditorium, Yenepoya Institute of Arts, Science, Commerce and Management (YIASCM), Kulur Campus, Mangaluru. The programme marked the beginning of a new academic journey for the newly admitted postgraduate students and aimed to orient them towards academic excellence, professional competence, research and holistic development.
The inaugural programme was graced by Dr P Sreeramana Aithal, director, Poornaprajna Institute of Management, Udupi, as the chief guest, and Dr B T Nandish, controller of examinations, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), Mangaluru, as the guest of honour. Prof Jeevan Raj, principal, YIASCM; Prof Shareena P, vice principal and dean, faculty of commerce and management; and Narayan Sukumar A, vice principal, were also present, along with the staff and students.
Delivering the chief guest’s address, Dr P Sreeramana Aithal emphasised that postgraduate education marks a transition from general academic learning to specialisation and research. He encouraged students to develop a research-oriented mindset by identifying challenges in their respective disciplines, analysing them systematically and working towards original solutions and innovations. Referring to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, he highlighted the significance of continuous inquiry and problem-solving in higher education and urged students to view themselves as emerging researchers and contributors to knowledge. Dr Aithal also reflected on the role of Artificial Intelligence in education, observing that while AI provides rapid access to information, teachers and mentors remain important in guiding students towards meaningful learning and new possibilities. He emphasised the need to use technology wisely while developing knowledge, skills, experience and positive attitudes. Highlighting the importance of time management, he reminded students that time is an irreplaceable resource and encouraged them to plan their postgraduate years purposefully. He further spoke about confidence and maturity, noting that these are shaped by values and ethics, character and discipline, and respect for tradition and cultural grounding. He encouraged students to maintain healthy competition with themselves, their peers and professional standards as they strive for excellence.
Addressing the gathering as the guest of honour, Dr B T Nandish highlighted the transition into postgraduate education as an important stage of personal and professional growth. He encouraged students to cultivate curiosity and an analytical mindset, questioning existing ideas and exploring challenges within their chosen disciplines. Dr Nandish stressed that academic qualifications alone do not determine professional success and that students must develop the competencies required to apply their knowledge effectively. He also highlighted self-discipline and collaboration as important qualities for sustained achievement, encouraging students to approach their postgraduate studies with a professional mindset.
Delivering the presidential address, Prof Jeevan Raj, principal, YIASCM, expressed his gratitude to the parents and students for choosing YIASCM for their postgraduate education and warmly welcomed the new batch to the institution. He emphasised that higher education requires students to take ownership of their academic journey and uphold high standards in their studies and conduct. Prof. Jeevan Raj highlighted the institution’s commitment to fostering an environment that supports academic integrity, character building and disciplined learning. He encouraged students to make full use of the campus facilities, faculty guidance and research support available to them. He urged the new batch to actively engage with the institutional environment and use these resources to develop into competent professionals and responsible leaders in their chosen fields.
Prof Shareena P, dean, faculty of commerce and management, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), and vice principal, YIASCM, delivered the overview and orientation address, introducing the students to the academic environment, institutional framework and expectations associated with postgraduate education. Prof Shareena emphasised that a postgraduate degree should be viewed as an opportunity to develop advanced subject expertise and professional capability, rather than merely as an additional qualification. She encouraged students to aspire to become subject-matter experts and resource persons in their respective fields through deeper engagement with their disciplines and the integration of advanced knowledge with practical skills. She also highlighted the range of academic, personal and professional opportunities available at YIASCM and encouraged students to make effective use of the resources, guidance and developmental avenues provided by the institution. She urged them to participate actively in academic and co-curricular activities and to approach their postgraduate experience with commitment, discipline and a willingness to learn.
The programme was compered by Sahana M, assistant professor, department of MBA. Dr Rovina Sharon Soans, associate professor, department of MBA and programme coordinator, welcomed the gathering, while Srijana Shet, assistant professor, department of MCA, proposed the vote of thanks.
The inauguration of Navyarambh marked a purposeful beginning to the postgraduate students’ academic journey at YIASCM. The addresses collectively highlighted the importance of research, specialisation, curiosity, competency, academic integrity, discipline and professional preparedness, encouraging the students to make meaningful use of their postgraduate experience and prepare themselves to contribute effectively to their chosen fields and society.
