Cairo, Sep 2: At least 16 people were killed and 28 others injured after a bus overturned on the Dahab-Nuweiba road in Egypt’s South Sinai on Wednesday, local media reported, citing the Ministry of Health and Population.

The accident occurred before the Al-Saada area while the bus was travelling towards Nuweiba, Egypt Today reported, citing details released by the ministry.

As many as 20 ambulances were rushed to the accident site to evacuate the injured and provide first aid.

Egyptian Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar directed officials to ensure that the injured receive the highest level of medical treatment.

Meanwhile, Solidarity Minister Maya Morsy ordered officials to provide emergency relief assistance and take necessary measures to support those affected by the accident.

Earlier crash kills 18

In August, 18 people were killed and 30 others injured after two vehicles carrying workers collided in Egypt’s Ismailia Governorate, Ahram Online reported.

The crash occurred on the Al-Dawawis link road near the Al-Shabab electricity station. The injured were taken to Qassasin Central Hospital for treatment.

Security forces and ambulance crews rushed to the site following the accident, while authorities launched an investigation into the circumstances that led to the crash.

Road deaths rise in Egypt

Fatalities in road accidents in Egypt increased by 10.8 per cent to 5,829 in 2025, while the number of people injured rose by 10.7 per cent to 84,553, according to figures released by the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS), as reported by Ahram Online.

Children below the age of 15 recorded the highest number of fatalities among all age groups in 2025, with 1,580 deaths and 29,101 injuries, according to CAPMAS figures.
