Mangaluru, Aug 13: The Library Association of Milagres College celebrated National Librarians’ Day on August 12 at the college library. Riana D’Cunha, resident editor and CEO of Pingara Newspaper and an alumna of Milagres College, was the chief guest.

Addressing the gathering, she highlighted the importance of modern libraries as centres for learning and preparation for competitive examinations. She also spoke about the role of libraries in preserving and promoting books by local and self-published authors.

Prashanth Kumar Jain, librarian, Milagres CBSE School, also addressed the gathering and spoke about the four stages of reading: basic understanding, superficial reading and analysis, critical engagement, and mastery of the subject.

The programme was presided over by the principal of the college, Dr Alwin Serrao, who emphasised the intellectual benefits of reading. He encouraged students to overcome inertia and develop a strong and consistent reading habit.

Library secretary Spoorthi spoke about the significance of the day and highlighted the contributions of Dr S R Ranganathan, regarded as the 'father of library science in India'.

Chethana Kumari K, IQAC coordinator, Glancia Fernandes, vice principal, and students were present on the occasion. College librarian Prameela D’Souza welcomed the gathering. Ayesha Hannath compered the programme, while Nikel Lewis proposed the vote of thanks. Around 75 students participated in the programme.
