Espanyol striker Kike Garcia ruled out after injury, to undergo surgery

Madrid, Aug 5: Espanyol have suffered a major blow ahead of the new La Liga season after veteran striker Kike Garcia was ruled out for the opening weeks of the campaign with a tendon injury that will require surgery.

The 36-year-old sustained the injury during Espanyol's pre-season friendly against English Championship side Middlesbrough on Saturday. Garcia, who previously played for the English club, was forced off after just 18 minutes following an awkward challenge and received treatment before being substituted.

Medical examinations conducted after the squad returned to Barcelona confirmed tendon damage in his right leg, dealing a setback to coach Manolo Gonzalez ahead of the new campaign.

Espanyol confirmed that Garcia was scheduled to undergo surgery on Wednesday. While the club did not specify a recovery timeline, Spanish media reports said the experienced forward is expected to be sidelined for at least two months, ruling him out of the opening phase of the 2026-27 La Liga season.

Garcia was one of Espanyol's key performers last season, scoring eight league goals and providing a strong attacking presence with his physicality and aerial ability. His experience played an important role in helping the Barcelona-based club retain its top-flight status after a difficult campaign.

Espanyol's season took a dramatic turn after spending much of the first half in contention for a European qualification spot before an 18-match winless run dragged the side into a relegation battle.

Espanyol will open their 2026-27 La Liga campaign at home against newly promoted Levante on August 16. Garcia's absence leaves the club short of experience in attack, with the coaching staff expected to explore alternative options while awaiting the veteran striker's return following surgery.
