Glasgow, Jul 30: India's Dilip Gavit clinched a historic gold medal in the men's 100m T47 event at the Commonwealth Games 2026, clocking a season-best and Games record time of 10.71 seconds.

India made it a memorable one-two finish as Mohammed Basil Morssinganakath claimed the silver medal after crossing the finish line in 10.83 seconds.

Gavit's triumph marked India's third gold medal at the Games after the victories of Mirabai Chanu and Sharmila Dhankar. Following the double podium finish, India climbed to eighth place in the medal standings with three gold, nine silver and three bronze medals.

Speaking after his victory, Gavit dedicated the gold medal to his coach, Vaijanath Kale, on the occasion of Guru Purnima.

"The start was a bit slow, but I picked up speed later. I usually compete in the 400 metres, but I enjoyed running the 100 metres here. I come from a small village in Nashik, where I initially worked on farms. My coach noticed my talent and brought me to Nashik for training, taking care of all the expenses. Today is Guru Purnima, so this medal is my gift to my Guru," Gavit said.

Coach Vaijanath Kale recalled discovering Gavit during his school days and convincing his parents to allow him to pursue athletics.

"I first saw him at school and later persuaded his parents to let him train. He was competing in able-bodied events and performing well. The lack of proper medical facilities in rural areas eventually led to the amputation of his left hand. He was not even aware of para competitions at that time," Kale said.

The gold and silver medals further strengthened India's athletics campaign at the Commonwealth Games, with para athletes continuing to make a significant contribution to the country's medal tally.
