Woman blocks police van during Mumbai student protest, secures release of detainees

Mumbai, Jul 23: A young woman who stood in front of a police van carrying detained student protesters has emerged as a symbol of defiance during the ongoing nationwide agitation over alleged examination paper leaks.

The incident took place in Mumbai on Wednesday during demonstrations linked to the "Cockroach" protest movement, which began more than a month ago over alleged leaks in competitive entrance examinations for medical colleges and government jobs. The movement has since expanded into a wider campaign highlighting concerns over transparency, accountability and governance.

Twenty-seven-year-old Rhiya Ahir said she had been waiting for friends before joining the protest when she noticed a police van carrying detained demonstrators.

According to Ahir, she questioned the police officers about whether they had the required legal documentation to detain the protesters. Dissatisfied with their response, she initially walked alongside the moving vehicle before stepping directly in front of it when she could no longer keep pace.

Standing in the rain with one hand pressed against the front of the van, Ahir blocked its path for around 40 minutes while police officers remained inside and detained protesters sat in the vehicle.

She said she could not accept seeing citizens being treated like criminals for participating in a protest.

Ahir recalled that the driver revved the engine in an apparent attempt to make her move, and admitted that she feared she could be injured or arrested. Despite the risk, she refused to step aside.

The standoff ended after the detained protesters were released.

Reflecting on the incident, Ahir said fear had crossed her mind, but she remained determined to continue.

"I knew one thing. If I had started this, I had to end it," she said.

The episode has attracted widespread attention on social media, with images of Ahir standing before the police van being shared extensively as the student-led protests continue across the country.
