Mangaluru: St Aloysius University holds seminar on human rights for support staff

Mangaluru, Jul 18: The department of postgraduate studies and research in Social Work, School of Arts and Humanities, St Aloysius (Deemed to be University) in collaboration with National Human Rights Commission organized one-day seminar on strengthening human rights for support staff focusing on employment, health and skill development on July 17 in Eric Mathias Hall of the University.

Bipin Bihari Gautham, presenting officer (District Judge), National Human Rights Commission, New Dellhi was the chief guest and inaugurated the seminar. Dr Col Praveen Martis, SJ, vice chancellor of St Aloysius (Deemed to be University) presided over the programme. Dr Manohar Serrao, dean, School of Arts and Humanities, Dr Shwetha Rasquinha, convenor of the programme and student convenor, Jansita were on the dais.

Chief guest, Bipin Bihari Gautham in his speech spoke about the human dignity and the rights of the employees. He narrated the duties of the employees and appreciated the dedicated work of support staff in order to make all other employees and students comfortable. He said that there is no hierarchy of human dignity and all educational institutions must uphold the dignity of support staff.

Dr Col Praveen Martis SJ in his presidential address thanked Bipin Bihari Gautham, the presiding officer of National Human Rights Commission for being the chief guest expressed his gratitude to National Human Rights Commission for collaborating in organising this seminar. He briefed about the values of our Constitution and the fundamental rights of every individual of our country. He also spoke on justice, equality and the systems provided in the institution to create a workplace of respect and dignity for all.

Dr Shwetha Rasquinha, the convenor welcomed the gathering. Students of II MSW, Jeevan D’Souza and Dhanyashree compered the programme. Jansita, II MSW proposed the vote of thanks.

Seminar included sessions on occupational health by Dr Rameela Shekhar; workplace dignity and skill development by Dr Roshan Monteiro and understanding employee support and government benefits by Mr Kishore Attavar. The seminar witnessed the active participation of 200 participants.
