Former Qatar Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani dies at 74

Doha, Jul 12: Qatar's former Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, has died at the age of 74, the country's Amiri Diwan announced.

In an official statement, the Amiri Diwan expressed condolences over his passing and paid tribute to his contributions to Qatar.

"May Allah have mercy on his soul and grant him the best reward for his service and contributions to his homeland and nation," the statement said.

Sheikh Hamad served as the Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013 and played a pivotal role in transforming the Gulf nation through major economic, infrastructure and diplomatic initiatives. He stepped down in 2013, handing over power to his son, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in a rare voluntary transfer of leadership in the region.
