Red alert continues for Mumbai, Thane; schools shut

Mumbai, Jul 4: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has retained a Red Alert for Mumbai and Thane from Jul 4 to 6, warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across several districts of Maharashtra.

In view of the weather warning, authorities have declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Thane district and the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) area on Saturday. Emergency helplines have also been activated across the region to respond to rain-related incidents.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Mumbai, a Red Alert has been issued for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts for Jul 4. The alert will remain in force for these coastal districts on Jul 5 and 6 as well.

The IMD has forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at several places across the affected districts, with the possibility of waterlogging, disruption to transport and localised flooding.

Heavy rainfall has also been predicted for the ghat regions of Pune, Satara and Nashik districts.

Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, remain indoors during periods of intense rainfall and follow official advisories issued by local administrations and disaster management agencies.
