Five injured in car-tanker head-on collision near Gundya

Puttur, Jun 29: Five people were injured in a head-on collision between a car and a tanker on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway (NH 75) at Barchinahalla near Gundya on the afternoon of Sunday, June 28.

The injured, all residents of Sakleshpur, have been identified as Sanjay (34), Lalitha (45), Monappa (56), Prema (34), and Suresh (39). They have been admitted to Ashwini Hospital in Nellyadi as inpatients and are currently undergoing treatment.

The accident occurred when the car was travelling from Nelyadi towards Sakleshpur. As the vehicle reached Barchinahalla, it collided head-on with a tanker approaching from the opposite direction.

The collision, coupled with a massive influx of vehicles due to the long weekend, resulted in severe traffic congestion on the highway. A large number of pilgrims travelling to the Dharmasthala and Kukke Subrahmanya temples had already increased the vehicle density in Gundya. The accident right in the middle of the highway further crippled the flow of traffic, resulting in frequent gridlocks from the afternoon until the evening. Vehicles were seen lined up for kilometres.

Personnel from the Nelyadi police outpost were deployed to the spot to clear the bottleneck and restore the smooth movement of vehicles.
