Pune, Jun 28: Two persons died and 19 others were injured after a vehicle carrying 22 employees of a private company from Mumbai fell into a gorge and overturned near Pabe village in Pune’s Velhe area early Sunday morning.

The group was travelling towards Rajgad Fort through the Pabe Ghat route when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle while negotiating the final bend near Pabe village around 1.15 am, police said.

“The vehicle crashed through the roadside safety barrier and fell nearly 40 to 50 feet into a gorge before overturning,” a police officer said.

The deceased have been identified as Vishwas Baburao Satam (25) and Dhwani Chandresh Thakkar (23). Police said Thakkar died on the spot after getting trapped between two seats inside the vehicle.

The driver, Sandeep Tukaram Gaikwad, was also trapped beneath the overturned vehicle and suffered injuries.

Following the accident, Rajgad police alerted Velhe police and the Haveli Disaster Management Rescue Team. Rescue personnel, with help from local residents, carried out an operation to rescue the injured passengers.

Assistant Police Inspector Kishor Shelke of Velhe police station said the accident occurred between 1 am and 2 am on Sunday and a rescue operation was launched immediately.

“The rescue operation was carried out with the assistance of the disaster management team, and the bodies were recovered from the accident site,” Shelke said.

Officials said the vehicle had come to rest against a tree and diesel leakage, along with the ignition remaining switched on, created a possible fire hazard. Rescue teams used JCB machinery and ropes to lift the vehicle, while the seat belt and seat cushion were cut to free the driver.

Police recorded the driver’s statement at Velhe police station.

All injured passengers were admitted to Velhe Rural Hospital. The bodies of the deceased were sent for post-mortem examination and other legal procedures.

“A case has been registered against the driver for rash and negligent driving, and further investigation is underway,” Shelke said.
