Noel Tata to step down from six Tata Group boards on turning 70

Mumbai, Jun 25: Noel Tata will step down from the boards of six Tata Group companies in November after reaching the retirement age limit for non-executive directors, marking a significant leadership transition within the conglomerate.

Noel, who currently chairs Tata Trusts, will retire from the boards of Titan, Tata Steel, Tata Investment Corporation, Voltas, Tata International and Trent when he turns 70 on November 12. However, he will continue to serve on the board of Tata Sons, where the retirement age rule does not apply to directors nominated by Tata Trusts.

As chairman of Tata Trusts, which controls Tata Sons through its majority shareholding, Noel is among the Trusts' nominated directors on the Tata Sons board.

His final annual general meeting (AGM) as chairman of retail major Trent was held on Tuesday. Addressing shareholders, Noel said, “As you might be aware, this will be my last annual general meeting as chairman.”

Trent holds special significance in Noel's career, as it was the first Tata Group company where he began his professional journey and played a key role in transforming the business from a single-store operation into one of India's leading fashion and lifestyle retail chains.

Noel is also expected to chair his final AGMs at Voltas on June 30 and Tata Investment Corporation on July 1. Tata Steel's AGM is scheduled for July 2, where he serves as vice-chairman, while Titan's AGM is expected later in July.

He joined Trent's board in August 2010 and subsequently became a director on several other Tata Group company boards. Following the death of Ratan Tata in October 2024, Noel was appointed chairman of Tata Trusts and later inducted onto the Tata Sons board.

His retirement from multiple group companies is expected to trigger a series of board-level changes across the Tata Group's consumer, retail, investment and industrial businesses, where he has played an influential role in shaping strategy and governance.

The transition comes at a time when Tata Trusts is also navigating internal governance and organisational challenges, making the upcoming board restructuring closely watched within corporate circles.
