Badlapur, Jun 22: A birthday celebration turned tragic after a high-speed BMW crash on the incomplete Mumbai-Vadodara Highway in Badlapur during the early hours of Sunday left two people dead and another seriously injured.

The convertible BMW, allegedly travelling at a speed of 251 kmph with its roof open, was completely wrecked after crashing into a highway divider. The impact was so severe that body parts of the victims were reportedly scattered over a distance of nearly half a kilometre.

The deceased have been identified as Yogesh Kishan Negi (24) and Rebecca Babu Jacob (22). The injured passenger has been identified as Angad Gill (26), who is undergoing treatment in the ICU at Fortis Hospital.

Police said Gill and Negi were residents of Badlapur, while Rebecca was from Bandra. The group had gone out to celebrate Negi’s 24th birthday.

The accident occurred around 2 am near Eranjad in Badlapur when the car was travelling from the Titwala side towards Badlapur. Preliminary investigation suggests that the driver lost control due to excessive speed and the vehicle crashed into the divider before overturning multiple times.

A video reportedly recorded inside the car moments before the accident has gone viral on social media, showing the speedometer touching 251 kmph.

Kishore Shinde, Senior Police Inspector at Badlapur West Police Station, said the bodies have been sent to the government hospital in Ulhasnagar for post-mortem examination.

“Since the car was a convertible with an open hood, the occupants were thrown out upon impact, causing fatal injuries. We still do not know who was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident. As family members are currently not in a state to speak, we are waiting to record their statements,” Shinde said.

Police officials added that the stretch where the accident occurred was incomplete and had not been officially opened for public use. An investigation is underway to determine how the youths accessed the closed highway and from where they entered the road.
