Udupi: SMVITM students developed ‘Dual-Axis Solar Tracking System

Media Release

Udupi, Jun 12: Final year Mechanical Engineering students at Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology and Management (SMVITM), Bantakal have developed ‘Dual-Axis Solar Tracking System’.

The project work was carried out by Rohith N, Shreyas Kumar, Aishwarya Nayak and Manasa Manjunath Poojari under the guidance of Dr Madhukara Nayak, associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

At present, most of the solar photovoltaic power generation uses single axis tracking systems. But these systems result in low power generation and seasonal performance variations. These systems cannot adjust their orientation to maximize solar capture under varying solar positions.

Keeping this in mind, the students have developed ‘Dual-Axis Solar Tracking System’. This system uses sensors, a controller, and two motors to automatically rotate and tilt the solar panel in both horizontal and vertical directions, ensuring maximum exposure to sunlight throughout the year. Thus maximum solar photovoltaic power generation is possible with these systems.

The management, the principal Dr Nagaraj Bhat and HoD of Mechanical Engineering Dr Raja Yateesh Yadav have congratulated the team.
