Almonds may help improve memory, control blood sugar in prediabetes: Study

Mumbai, Jun 12: Prediabetes, a condition marked by elevated blood sugar levels that are not yet high enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes, continues to pose a growing global health challenge. If left unmanaged, it can increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease and other health complications.

A recent study published in The Journal of Nutrition has suggested that incorporating almonds into the daily diet may offer significant health benefits for individuals with prediabetes. Researchers found that regular almond consumption may help improve memory, support brain health and aid blood sugar management.

The study involved adults diagnosed with prediabetes who included almonds in their daily diet over a period of time. Researchers assessed various health indicators, including cognitive performance and blood glucose control, to evaluate the effects of almond consumption.

Findings showed that participants who consumed almonds regularly demonstrated improvements in memory and certain cognitive functions. Experts attribute these benefits to the rich nutritional profile of almonds, which contain healthy fats, protein, fibre, vitamin E, magnesium and antioxidants that support brain function.

Vitamin E, in particular, has been linked to better cognitive health, while antioxidants may help protect brain cells from oxidative stress, a factor associated with age-related memory decline.

The study also found that almonds contributed to better blood sugar regulation. Participants recorded improved glucose control, a key factor in reducing the risk of progressing from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes.

Researchers noted that the combination of fibre, protein and healthy fats in almonds helps slow digestion and reduce sudden spikes in blood sugar levels after meals. Magnesium, another nutrient present in almonds, is known to play an important role in insulin function and glucose metabolism.

Health experts emphasise that dietary modifications remain one of the most effective ways to manage prediabetes. Replacing processed snacks with nutrient-rich options such as almonds can be a simple yet effective step towards improving overall health and reducing future disease risk.
