Mumbai, Jun 10: Passengers aboard a BEST wet-lease electric bus had a narrow escape on Wednesday morning after thick smoke was seen emanating from one of the vehicle's rear tyres in Mumbai's Kurla area.

According to BEST officials, the incident occurred at around 8.15 am near Jambhori Maidan involving Bus No. 8527, operated by EV Trans-Mumbai on Route A-37/39.

The bus was travelling from Kurla Depot towards J. Mehta when the driver noticed heavy smoke coming from the left rear tyre.

Acting promptly, the driver stopped the vehicle and safely evacuated all passengers. The conductor immediately alerted the fire brigade, which rushed to the spot and initiated precautionary measures.

Officials said the fire brigade disconnected the bus's battery system, after which the smoke emission ceased.

The incident was subsequently reported to the BEST Bus Control Room, which dispatched a breakdown van to conduct a technical inspection and carry out necessary repairs.

"No passengers or crew members were injured or harmed in the incident," officials said.

The exact cause of the smoke has not yet been determined, and the vehicle has been taken for further examination.

Authorities credited the swift response of the driver, conductor and emergency personnel for preventing a potentially serious mishap.

The incident comes as Mumbai continues to expand its electric bus fleet under wet-lease arrangements as part of efforts to promote cleaner and more sustainable public transport.

Meanwhile, transport authorities are expected to investigate the mechanical issue and review safety measures to ensure smooth operation of electric buses across the city.

The latest incident follows another accident involving a BEST wet-lease electric bus on Monday near Poisar Depot in Mumbai's western suburbs, in which two pedestrians were injured, including a 24-year-old woman who remains in critical condition in a private hospital's intensive care unit.
