Testosterone myths create confusion about men's health, say experts

New Delhi, Jun 4: Testosterone is often associated with strength, vitality, muscle mass and masculinity. As men grow older, concerns about declining testosterone levels frequently lead many to seek supplements, therapies and other measures in an effort to counter the effects of aging. However, health experts say several myths surrounding the hormone continue to create confusion and may cause men to overlook other important aspects of their health.

According to Dr Dinesh Kumar, Director of Internal Medicine at Fortis Greater Noida, testosterone is an important hormone, but it represents only one aspect of overall health. While testosterone levels naturally decline with age, not every symptom of aging is linked to low testosterone, and not every individual requires hormone therapy.

Experts note that one of the most common misconceptions is that testosterone levels fall sharply during middle age. In reality, testosterone typically declines gradually, by about one per cent annually after the age of 30 to 40. This slow reduction is considered a normal part of aging and does not necessarily cause symptoms or require medical treatment.

Doctors also caution against assuming that fatigue, reduced energy levels or lack of motivation are always caused by low testosterone. Such symptoms can result from various factors, including poor sleep, chronic stress, obesity, depression, thyroid disorders, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and nutritional deficiencies. Medical professionals stress the importance of comprehensive evaluation before attributing symptoms solely to hormonal changes.

The increasing popularity of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) has also contributed to the perception that it is an anti-aging solution. However, experts emphasise that TRT is generally recommended only for men who have clinically low testosterone levels accompanied by symptoms that significantly affect their quality of life. Using testosterone without a confirmed deficiency may expose individuals to unnecessary health risks while offering limited benefits.

Another widespread belief is that higher testosterone levels automatically lead to better health, greater strength and improved physical performance. Experts warn that excessively high testosterone levels can increase the risk of cardiovascular complications, sleep disturbances, acne, mood changes, fertility problems and other adverse effects. Maintaining hormone levels within a healthy range is considered more beneficial than pursuing unusually high levels.

Health experts further point out that testosterone decline is not entirely beyond an individual's control. Regular exercise, strength training, maintaining a healthy weight, adequate sleep, stress management and a balanced diet can help support healthy hormone levels. Proper management of chronic conditions such as obesity and diabetes may also contribute to improved hormonal balance.

Doctors stress that healthy aging involves much more than monitoring testosterone levels. Regular health screenings, blood pressure checks, cholesterol monitoring, blood sugar control, mental health assessments and maintaining an active lifestyle all play important roles in long-term wellbeing.

They advise men experiencing persistent fatigue, reduced libido, mood changes, loss of muscle strength or difficulty concentrating to seek professional medical advice rather than assuming low testosterone is the cause. A proper medical evaluation can help identify the underlying issue and determine the most appropriate course of treatment.

Experts conclude that while testosterone remains an important hormone for men's health, it is not the sole determinant of energy, strength or healthy aging. Sustainable lifestyle habits, routine health check-ups and attention to overall physical and mental wellbeing remain the key factors supporting long-term health and quality of life.
