Iran says no final deal reached with US as talks continue over ceasefire and Hormuz Strait

Tehran, May 30: Iran has stated that no final agreement has been reached with the United States, despite ongoing exchanges of messages between the two sides amid efforts to advance negotiations related to the regional conflict and ceasefire arrangements.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said discussions remain underway and stressed that Tehran's immediate priority is securing an end to the ongoing conflict rather than addressing broader nuclear-related issues.

Speaking in an interview with Iran’s state-run television network, Baghaei said negotiations have not yet entered detailed discussions concerning uranium enrichment or Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium. He emphasized that the current focus remains on ending hostilities and stabilising the situation in the region.

Baghaei's remarks came after US President Donald Trump publicly outlined a series of conditions that he said would be necessary for any future agreement with Iran. Among those demands, Trump insisted that Iran must permanently abandon any possibility of developing a nuclear weapon and allow international oversight regarding its nuclear materials.

The US President also called for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to unrestricted maritime traffic and said any sea mines in the region should be removed. He further stated that the United States, in coordination with Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), would oversee the removal and destruction of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpiles.

Responding to questions regarding the strategic waterway, Baghaei maintained that decisions concerning the future management of the Strait of Hormuz are matters exclusively involving Iran and Oman.

Trump additionally indicated that no financial compensation would be provided to Iran at this stage, stating that discussions regarding payments remain suspended pending further developments.

The latest statements come against the backdrop of a fragile ceasefire reached on April 8 following 40 days of intense fighting involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. Since then, multiple rounds of indirect communication and draft proposals have reportedly been exchanged through mediators in an effort to establish a broader framework for peace and de-escalation.

While both sides have acknowledged ongoing contacts, significant differences remain over key issues, including Iran's nuclear programme, maritime security, sanctions, and the implementation of any future agreement. Officials on both sides have indicated that negotiations are continuing, but no final memorandum or binding understanding has yet been concluded.
