Mumbai, May 20: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Ashwini Bhide carried out surprise inspections at several civic facilities in Mumbai during the early hours of Wednesday to review sanitation, pest control and waste management operations.

Bhide visited Mumbai’s nearly century-old Pest Control Depot located at Mint Road in Fort, along with the A-2 Road Repair and Stores Depot and the Sewerage Department depot situated in the city’s ‘A’ Ward area.

During the inspection, the civic chief examined equipment used for pest and rodent control, assessed operational measures on the ground and reviewed the overall functioning of the facilities.

She also checked attendance registers and verified the physical presence of sanitation workers deployed at the depots.

Bhide instructed officials to ensure immediate resolution of complaints received from citizens through the MARG (Management and Redressal of Grievances) application and stressed that such complaints must be treated on priority.

Deputy Commissioner (Zone-1) Chanda Jadhav, Deputy Commissioner from the Municipal Commissioner’s Office Prashant Gaikwad, Assistant Commissioner of ‘A’ Ward Gajanan Bellale and other civic officials accompanied her during the visit.

Last week, the BMC Commissioner had also conducted a surprise inspection at a sanitation workers’ outpost in Kannamwar Nagar at Vikhroli East.

According to civic officials, Bhide interacted with sanitation staff deployed at the outpost in the S Ward area and reviewed ongoing cleanliness operations.

During the visit, she directed officials to intensify sanitation efforts and prioritise cleanliness of roads, junctions and surrounding public spaces across Mumbai.

The BMC stated that the commissioner also instructed officials to focus on eliminating garbage dumping spots through sustained public awareness campaigns and regular monitoring.

She further emphasised the need for effective utilisation of modern sanitation machinery and manpower to improve waste management systems and maintain cleanliness standards across the city.

Deputy Commissioner Prashant Gaikwad, Deputy Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) Kiran Dighavkar, Deputy Commissioner (Zone 6) Santoshkumar Dhonde, Assistant Commissioner Samreen Sayyed and other civic officials were present during the inspection.

Meanwhile, Bhide also conducted a surprise inspection of the Kanjurmarg municipal solid waste management facility last week to review measures aimed at controlling foul odour at the site.

According to the BMC, the commissioner spent nearly one-and-a-half hours inspecting various operations at the facility and reviewing solid waste management processes.

During the visit, she inspected the waste segregation centre, composting unit, waste-to-energy plant and the bio-reactor landfill site, while directing officials to improve operational efficiency and strengthen odour mitigation measures wherever necessary.
