UP, May 7: Six people, including five children and a woman, went missing after a boat carrying nine passengers submerged in the Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district on Wednesday. Three persons were rescued safely, officials said.

According to District Magistrate Abhishek Goyal, the incident occurred when the passengers were returning from a routine trip near Ghatampur. Local villagers and police personnel rushed to the spot immediately after receiving information about the mishap.

“A boat carrying nine people submerged in the Yamuna River. Three people were rescued immediately, while six remain missing. SDRF, NDRF and flood relief teams have been deployed and rescue operations are underway,” the District Magistrate said.

He added that, according to the surviving boatman, the boat did not overturn but gradually submerged in the river. Those who could swim managed to escape, while efforts continue to trace the missing persons.

BJP MLA Manoj Prajapati said the administration was on high alert and multiple SDRF teams had been pressed into service. “The government will take action as per rules and a detailed report will be submitted to the Chief Minister,” he stated.

DIG Banda Division Rajesh Yash confirmed that the missing persons include one woman and five children aged between five and 15 years. Police, district officials, SDRF personnel and flood relief teams continued the rescue operation late into the night.

The incident comes days after another major boating tragedy in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur district, where a cruise boat capsized in the waters of Bargi Dam, claiming 13 lives. Authorities had rescued 29 people in that incident after an extensive search operation.
