Beijing, May 5: At least 21 people were killed and 61 others injured after a massive explosion ripped through a fireworks factory in China’s Hunan province, state media reported on Monday.
The blast occurred around 4.40 pm at Liuyang Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Co. in Liuyang, a key hub for fireworks production under Changsha city.

Videos circulating on social media showed thick plumes of white smoke rising high into the sky moments after the explosion, indicating the intensity of the blast.
According to reports, the impact was felt across nearby areas, with local residents describing a powerful shockwave that hurled heavy debris and rocks onto surrounding roads, creating dangerous conditions.
Emergency response teams were rushed to the site and launched an extensive rescue operation to locate survivors and secure the premises. Authorities said search efforts are ongoing, with teams combing through the debris.
Officials have not yet confirmed the cause of the explosion. A detailed investigation is expected to examine safety measures and chemical storage practices at the facility once the area is stabilised.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for “all-out efforts” in rescue operations and directed authorities to ensure immediate medical treatment for the injured.
He has also ordered a thorough probe into the incident, stressing that those responsible must be held accountable. Emphasising workplace safety, Xi urged all regions to strengthen risk assessment and tighten oversight, particularly in high-risk industrial sectors.
The incident comes amid rising concerns over safety standards in the pyrotechnics industry. Less than three months ago, a similar explosion at a firecracker store in Hubei province had claimed 12 lives.
