Chandigarh, May 2: Punjab has recorded a sharp 66 per cent rise in post-settlement Goods and Services Tax collections for April 2026 compared to the same month last year, triggering political reactions and competing claims over governance.
According to Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, GST collections increased from Rs 1,795 crore in April 2025 to Rs 2,987 crore in April 2026. He said the growth surpasses that of all major states as well as the national average.
Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal hailed the development, attributing the surge to improved governance and policy direction. He said that for decades, governments cited lack of funds as a reason for inaction, but Punjab has demonstrated that “it was never about money, it was about intent.”

Kejriwal added that increased revenue is now being utilised to improve public services, calling it a reflection of the AAP governance model.
The development comes amid heightened political tensions in the state. A recent session of the Punjab Assembly witnessed a heated exchange between the ruling AAP and the opposition Congress over allegations against Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
Congress leaders demanded that Mann undergo an alcohol test, alleging he appeared intoxicated during proceedings. The remarks led to sharp reactions inside the House, with both sides trading accusations.
Responding to the claims, Mann dismissed the allegations, saying the opposition had no substantive issues to raise.
While the ruling party has projected the GST growth as evidence of effective governance, opposition parties continue to question the administration, indicating further political confrontations in the state.
