New Delhi, May 1: Vietnam’s President To Lam is set to visit New Delhi in his first major foreign engagement after assuming office, with a potential BrahMos missile deal emerging as a key highlight of the trip.
According to sources, discussions are underway for the procurement of shore-based BrahMos missile systems aimed at strengthening Vietnam’s coastal defence capabilities. The proposed deal, estimated at around Rs 5,800 crore, is expected to include missile batteries, training support, logistics, and an initial consignment of the supersonic cruise missiles.
If finalised, Vietnam could become the third Southeast Asian nation to induct the Indo-Russian BrahMos system, following the Philippines, which signed a deal in 2022, and Indonesia, which is currently in advanced stages of negotiation.

The development underscores Vietnam’s strategic push to bolster its maritime deterrence amid growing tensions in the South China Sea. BrahMos, known for its high speed, precision strike capability, and sea-skimming profile, is seen as well-suited to protect Vietnam’s extensive coastline and offshore assets.
Sources further indicated that Russia has cleared the transfer, reaffirming trilateral cooperation between India, Russia, and Vietnam despite global geopolitical and supply chain challenges. The deal is also expected to provide a significant boost to India’s “Make in India” initiative in the defence sector.
Beyond defence procurement, the visit is being viewed as a reflection of deepening India-Vietnam ties and New Delhi’s rising role as a key security partner in the Indo-Pacific region. Vietnam’s interest in Indian defence systems highlights the growing credibility and acceptance of indigenous military platforms in Southeast Asia.
President To Lam’s visit is expected to further strengthen bilateral cooperation across strategic and defence sectors, marking a new chapter in India-Vietnam relations.
