Srinagar, Apr 30: The Jammu and Kashmir Crime Branch on Thursday announced that it has filed a chargesheet against an accused in a fraud case involving false promises of land allotment and government jobs.
According to officials, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Crime Branch submitted the chargesheet in FIR No. 84/2022 under Section 420 of the RPC against Bashir Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Astanpora, Tailbal Hazratbal in Srinagar. The chargesheet has been filed before the Court of Judge Small Causes Srinagar for judicial proceedings.

The case dates back to January 2019, when the accused allegedly deceived multiple complainants by promising them plots of land through the Jammu Development Authority (JDA) and government jobs for their relatives. Investigations revealed that he collected substantial sums of money on the basis of these assurances but failed to deliver on either promise.
Officials stated that evidence gathered during the probe confirmed that the accused intentionally misled the victims and dishonestly obtained money, constituting an offence of cheating under the relevant legal provisions.
Following the findings, the Crime Branch proceeded to file the chargesheet, paving the way for trial in the case.
Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious and vigilant against such economic frauds. Citizens have been advised to report suspicious activities to the Economic Offences Wing or senior police officers, including SSP Abdul Waheed Shah, and to file complaints through official channels if they fall victim to financial scams.
The Crime Branch, a specialised wing of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, focuses on investigating complex and financial crimes, with dedicated personnel and technological support to handle such cases.
