Iran rules out direct talks with US in Pakistan amid mediation push

Islamabad, Apr 25: Iran has denied any plans for direct talks with the United States in Islamabad, stating that its position will instead be conveyed through Pakistani mediators.

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei confirmed that no meeting between Iranian and US officials is scheduled during the ongoing diplomatic engagements in Islamabad.

He said Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is in Pakistan for discussions with top leadership as part of mediation efforts aimed at ending what Tehran described as “American-imposed war of aggression” and restoring peace in the region.

Araghchi is expected to hold talks with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir. Earlier, he described his visit as a “timely tour” to coordinate on bilateral issues and regional developments, emphasising that neighbouring countries remain a priority.

Meanwhile, the United States has stepped up its diplomatic presence in Pakistan. US President Donald Trump has sent special envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner to Islamabad, where they are expected to engage with Iranian representatives indirectly.

The White House indicated that Vice President JD Vance is on standby and could travel to Pakistan if required. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Washington has observed “some progress” from the Iranian side in recent days.

However, Iranian media has rejected US claims of engagement. Reports stated that Tehran has not sought talks with Washington and has instead turned down US requests for negotiations under current conditions.

Despite the public differences, Trump expressed cautious optimism, stating that discussions are progressing and that the US is now “dealing with the people who are in charge” in Iran. He also acknowledged uncertainty about Iran’s leadership dynamics.

The developments come amid ongoing tensions linked to the Iran conflict, with Pakistan playing a mediating role between the two sides.
