Spilled drink at Goa bar triggers violent clash, six injured in Chapora incident

Mapusa, Apr 23: A minor altercation over a spilled alcoholic drink escalated into a violent clash at a bar in Chapora, Goa, leaving six men from Manipur injured and prompting police to register cross-complaints from both sides.

According to police, the incident occurred in the early hours of April 16, around 12:30 am, when a waiter accidentally spilled alcohol on a customer at the establishment. The situation quickly deteriorated after the group of customers allegedly reacted angrily, using abusive language and throwing a drink back at the staff member.

The group initially left the premises but reportedly returned shortly afterwards with additional people. What followed was a violent confrontation in which bar employees allegedly attacked the group using wooden benches, fists, and baseball bats.

Six individuals sustained injuries in the incident, including a 19-year-old identified as D Pahrii, who suffered a serious nasal fracture and facial trauma. The others injured were identified as D Khohriilou (24), Graceson Gangmel (25), Merangchiba Walling (26), Shimmei Awungshi (24), and Somatai Zimik (27). All were treated at the North Goa District Hospital.

The case gained wider attention after images of the injured circulated on social media, prompting police action. Anjuna police have registered a case against bar staff based on a complaint filed by Ngaoveine Kyapaomai, alleging assault with dangerous weapons and intimidation.

Charges have been filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including provisions related to causing hurt with dangerous weapons, criminal intimidation, and intent to provoke public disorder.

In response, the bar staff has also filed a counter-complaint, accusing the group of vandalism. Police have issued notices to the accused employees and said that the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
