Srinagar airport: Two US nationals detained over satellite phone in luggage

Srinagar, Apr 19: Two United States nationals were detained at Srinagar airport on Sunday after security officials reportedly recovered a satellite phone from their luggage during a routine security check.

According to officials, the individuals were questioned by airport security personnel before being handed over to the local police for further investigation. One of the detained passengers has been identified as Jeoffery Scot from Montana.

Authorities said the satellite communication device was found inside his baggage during screening procedures.

In India, the use and possession of satellite phones without prior government permission is strictly prohibited. Devices such as Thuraya and Iridium satellite phones are regulated under security guidelines, and unauthorised possession can lead to detention, seizure of equipment, and legal action under the Indian Telegraph Act and related provisions.

Officials noted that India maintains stringent controls on telecom equipment due to national security considerations, and similar cases involving both foreign nationals and Indian citizens have been reported in the past.

In one such earlier incident in May last year, a US-based ophthalmologist was stopped at Puducherry airport after an Iridium satellite phone was detected in her possession, leading to a police inquiry. Authorities have also previously taken action against a Chinese national and a British executive for carrying unauthorised satellite devices at airports and hotels in India.

To strengthen compliance, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued a directive on January 30, 2025, instructing airlines operating international flights to India to clearly inform passengers about the ban through announcements, overseas offices, and onboard advisories.

Further investigation into the Srinagar incident is underway.
