US extends waiver on Russian oil; Hormuz reopening lifts markets

Daijiworld Media Network - Washington

Washington, Apr 18: The United States has extended a waiver allowing continued purchases of Russian oil amid global supply concerns, even as easing geopolitical tensions provided relief to energy markets.

US President Donald Trump and Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the Strait of Hormuz is now fully open to commercial shipping following a ceasefire linked to developments in Lebanon.

While Trump stated that the key maritime route is ready for full passage, he clarified that the US naval blockade on Iran will remain in place until a broader agreement is reached.

The reopening of the strategic strait prompted an immediate reaction in global markets, with oil prices declining and stock markets surging on improved supply outlook.

Meanwhile, the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah appears to be holding, allowing thousands of displaced families in Lebanon to begin returning home after weeks of conflict.

Despite the positive developments, uncertainties persist as diplomatic negotiations continue and key issues remain unresolved.
