New York City, Apr 14: Political turmoil intensified as two members of the United States House of Representatives announced their resignations following serious allegations of sexual misconduct.
Eric Swalwell, a Democrat who had also been campaigning for governor of California, declared he would step down from Congress. His decision came shortly after suspending his gubernatorial bid. While denying the allegations against him, Swalwell acknowledged “mistakes in judgment” and issued an apology. He is currently under criminal investigation after multiple women accused him of sexual misconduct, including one allegation of sexual assault at a hotel in New York City. The House Ethics Committee had also initiated a probe, with calls for his expulsion gaining momentum.

On the Republican side, Tony Gonzales also confirmed his resignation amid controversy surrounding his personal conduct. The case drew heightened attention after the tragic death of a former staffer, Regina Santos-Aviles, who died by suicide last year. While Gonzales initially denied any relationship, he later admitted to having an affair. Additional allegations from another staffer further intensified scrutiny, contributing to mounting pressure for his resignation.
Swalwell’s exit from the California governor’s race could also have political implications. With multiple Democrats competing in a non-partisan primary system—where the top two candidates advance regardless of party—his withdrawal may help consolidate votes and improve the party’s chances of securing a spot in the final election.
The resignations mark a significant moment in US politics, highlighting growing accountability pressures and the serious consequences of misconduct allegations for public officials.
