Guwahati, Apr 14: Sujata Gurung Chowdhury, mother of Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate from Guwahati Central constituency Kunki Chowdhury, has lodged a complaint with the National Commission for Women against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging that he made false and defamatory statements about her during the election campaign.
In her complaint, Sujata Chowdhury stated that she is a private individual with no involvement in politics and was drawn into controversy solely due to her daughter’s candidature in the ongoing Assam Assembly elections 2026.

She alleged that during a public campaign, the Chief Minister claimed that her social media activity had hurt religious sentiments, that she sympathised with Pakistan, supported anti-national elements, and publicly consumed beef. Terming the accusations “false, baseless and malicious,” she said they were intended to defame her and politically target her daughter.
Chowdhury also objected to a photograph displayed during the campaign, which was allegedly used to support the claim that she was consuming beef. Clarifying the matter, she stated that the image was taken at the International Church of Cannabis, and the object seen in the picture was an artistic prop shaped like a conical cylinder, not any food item.
She further claimed that following the allegations, her personal photographs — including those featuring her minor son — were widely circulated on social media without consent, leading to online abuse, harassment, and character assassination. She also alleged that manipulated images and AI-generated content were used to malign her reputation, causing severe mental distress to her family.
Supporting her clarification, Elevation Ministries reportedly issued a statement confirming that the object in the image was a pillow used as part of a museum installation and not meat.
Meanwhile, Kunki Chowdhury, contesting from Guwahati Central, said she has been receiving encouraging support since the start of her campaign.
Polling for all 126 constituencies in Assam was held on April 9 in a single phase, with counting of votes scheduled for May 4.
