Washington, Apr 13: US President Donald Trump said that Iran is in a “very bad” and “desperate” condition, confirming that a planned blockade targeting the country would come into force within hours.
Speaking to reporters upon returning to Washington from Miami, Trump said that while a regional ceasefire was “holding well,” there would be no easing of US pressure as the new restrictions are set to begin at 10 a.m. on Monday.
He stated that the blockade would be implemented as scheduled and alleged that multiple vessels were attempting to move oil shipments, suggesting increased maritime activity linked to Iranian exports. He also indicated that several countries were assisting US efforts to limit Iran’s ability to sell oil, though he did not specify which nations were involved.

Addressing the possibility of renewed diplomatic talks with Iran, Trump dismissed the prospects of negotiations, reiterating that Tehran would not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. He further said he was unconcerned about whether Iran returns to the negotiating table, signaling a firm stance against diplomatic compromise.
The remarks reflect a continued tightening of Washington’s approach, combining economic restrictions with maritime pressure aimed at curbing Iran’s energy exports, a key source of national revenue.
During the same interaction, Trump also criticised NATO, expressing dissatisfaction with the alliance and arguing that the United States bears a disproportionate financial burden for its operations.
He declined to comment on questions related to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, ending the brief press interaction shortly afterward.
The planned blockade is seen as a major escalation in US strategy toward Iran, with a particular focus on restricting its oil trade, which Washington views as central to limiting Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and regional influence.
