Fresh court filings reveal key evidence in 2011 Iowa realtor murder case

Iowa, Apr 10: New court filings in a long-pending murder case in Iowa have shed light on the prosecution’s evidence in the 2011 fatal shooting of a young real estate agent that had sent shockwaves through the industry.

According to documents filed by prosecutors, a witness allegedly saw Kristin Ramsey outside the open house where Ashley Okland (27) was shot dead shortly after hearing two loud sounds believed to be gunshots.

Ramsey, who was charged with first-degree murder last month, is currently being held on a $2 million bond. Her defence team has maintained her innocence and sought a reduction in bail to $100,000, describing her as a long-time resident with strong community ties.

The prosecution’s motion states that a neighbour saw Ramsey near the front door of the model home and later pacing near her car while speaking on the phone. The call, reportedly made within minutes of the suspected gunshots, was to an employee of the company that owned the housing development where Okland was hosting the open house.

At the time of the incident, Ramsey was employed as a sales manager with the same company, the filing noted.

Authorities recovered two .380 calibre cartridge cases from the scene, while Okland was found with two close-range gunshot wounds. No signs of forced entry or damage were reported, and no other individuals were seen in the vicinity at the time.

After Ramsey allegedly drove away in an erratic manner, the witness discovered Okland unresponsive inside the house and alerted emergency services.

Prosecutors further claimed that Ramsey had provided inconsistent accounts of her whereabouts on the day of the incident — April 8, 2011 — during multiple interviews with investigators.
Search warrants executed at Ramsey’s residence, both shortly after the crime and again on the day of her arrest last month, reportedly led to the recovery of firearms, illegal substances, and materials described as threatening in nature.

However, the filings do not indicate a clear motive behind the killing.

The killing of Okland had prompted widespread concern within the real estate sector, leading to the adoption of safety protocols aimed at protecting agents during property showings.

Despite these measures, recent industry surveys suggest that safety concerns persist among real estate professionals, with many continuing to report situations where they feel vulnerable.

The case remains under investigation as legal proceedings continue.
