Chandrapur, Apr 4: In a shocking incident, a 22-year-old man allegedly strangled his girlfriend using a mobile charger wire and attempted to pass off the murder as suicide in Chandrapur, police said on Saturday.

The accused, Ankesh Yogesh Bahirwar (22), has been arrested, while the victim has been identified as Priyanka Wandhar, who was reportedly seven years older than him.

According to police, the incident occurred on the night of March 14 but came to light only on April 3 after the postmortem report confirmed that the death was a homicide. Priyanka, who was living separately from her husband, was in a relationship with the accused, and the two had been staying together at her residence.

Investigations revealed that the couple had frequent arguments in recent days, reportedly over issues related to control and restrictions on the accused’s interactions with his family. On the night of the incident, a heated argument allegedly escalated, during which Ankesh strangled Priyanka with a mobile charger wire.

After the incident, the accused reportedly informed the victim’s father that she had become unconscious and may have attempted suicide. She was rushed to hospital by family members, where doctors declared her dead.

Initially treated as a case of suicide, the truth emerged after the postmortem report confirmed strangulation. Police subsequently registered a case and launched an investigation.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to the crime. Police have recovered the charger wire and an extension board believed to have been used in the murder.

Further investigation is underway.
