Residents protest smart meter installation at St Inez building

Daijiworld Media Network - Panaji

Panaji, Apr 1: Tensions flared at a private residential complex in St Inez when officials from the electricity department attempted to install smart electricity meters, only to face strong resistance from occupants.

According to sources, residents opposed the move, expressing reluctance to adopt the new metering system. A number of occupants gathered at the site, voicing concerns and questioning both the need for the upgrade and its potential impact.

Many residents feared that the introduction of smart meters could lead to increased electricity bills and additional charges. Some openly stated they were not prepared to take on any extra financial burden associated with the new system.

Due to the growing opposition, officials—who were carrying out installations as part of a broader smart metering rollout—were unable to proceed with their work at the building.
