Goa: Borewell sealed in Dabolim housing complex after diarrhoea outbreak raises alarm

Vasco, Mar 22: Acting on growing health concerns and alleged violations of groundwater usage norms, the Water Resources Department (WRD) on Saturday sealed a borewell at the Prabhu Violetta residential complex in Dabolim after the expiry of a three-day show-cause notice.

The action follows reports of 158 diarrhoea cases from the residential complex, prompting concern among health authorities and residents. Officials said the borewell was suspected to be a possible source contributing to the outbreak.

According to WRD officials, a show-cause notice was issued on March 20 after a site inspection conducted on March 18 based on a complaint from the Primary Health Centre in Cortalim. The inspection revealed that the borewell, which had been permitted strictly for construction purposes, was being used for domestic consumption in violation of the Goa Ground Water Regulation Act, 2002.

Authorities had directed the concerned parties to respond within three days, warning of closure and penalties in case of non-compliance. With no satisfactory reply received within the stipulated period, the department proceeded to seal the borewell.

Officials emphasised that misuse of groundwater, especially in residential areas, could pose serious public health risks. They added that strict enforcement of regulations was necessary in view of the prevailing health situation.

The notice had also cautioned that if the violation is found to have adversely impacted residents’ health, further legal action, including criminal proceedings, could be initiated.

Meanwhile, health authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and are working to identify the exact source of contamination. Residents have been advised to use safe and treated water until the issue is fully resolved.
