Washington, Mar 16: Donald Trump said the United States could soon reach a deal with Cuba or take other action, indicating that developments in the long-strained relationship between the two nations may come quickly.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump said, “Cuba also wants to make a deal, and I think we will pretty soon either make a deal or do whatever we have to do.” He added that while Washington was in talks with Havana, the administration would prioritise dealing with Iran first.
The remarks come amid continued tensions between Washington and Havana after years of sanctions, diplomatic friction and disagreements over migration and security issues.

Meanwhile, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said earlier that Havana had opened discussions with the United States as the island struggles with one of its worst economic crises in decades.
In a video message aired on state television, Díaz-Canel said the talks were aimed at resolving bilateral differences through dialogue and expressed hope that negotiations would move the two countries away from confrontation.
Cuba’s economic crisis has deepened in recent months due to disruptions in imported oil supplies, which are crucial for running power plants and transportation systems on the island. The shortages have led to rolling electricity outages and disruptions in several public services.
In recent weeks, Trump had made several remarks suggesting that Cuba was close to collapse or eager to reach an agreement with Washington. Earlier this month, he even suggested that Cuba could face a “friendly takeover,” before adding that it might not necessarily be friendly.
Despite renewed contacts, major differences remain between the two governments. US officials have indicated that any easing of pressure may depend on political and economic concessions from Havana, while Cuban authorities insist that negotiations must respect the country’s sovereignty and independence.
