Mangaluru: NUINS conducts first aid, emergency training workshop for teachers

Mangaluru, Mar 16: The NSS unit, in collaboration with the department of child health nursing, Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences (NUINS), organized a one-day ‘Apathbandhu – First Aid and Emergency Training Programme” for the Pre-University teachers of St Agnes PU College on March 13.

The workshop was inaugurated by the chief guest, Fr Vincent Dsouza, director, CODP-ISD and secretary, Commission of Social Development, diocese of Mangalore. The programme was presided over by Prof Dr Sabitha Nayak, vice principal, NUINS. Other dignitaries present on the occasion included Prof Dr Sujatha R, head of the department of child health nursing; Dr Sharlet Simple D’Souza, associate professor, department of child health nursing; and Sukesh Shetty, NSS programme officer, NUINS. The programme began with a welcome address by Jeevitha Alva, NSS programme officer.

Fr Vincent D’Souza. in his address appreciated the initiative taken by Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences in organizing community-focused programmes and conveyed his best wishes for their continued efforts in promoting social welfare. The training sessions were conducted by Dr Sharlet Simple D’Souza and Sheryl Fernandes, faculty members of the department of child health nursing, NUINS, along with NSS programme officers Sukesh Shetty, Jeevitha Alva, and Keerthimala K.

The workshop covered essential first aid topics including application of bandages, fracture and wound care, demonstration of bandaging techniques, first aid management for choking, drowning, seizures, bites, electric shock, haemorrhage control, and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). The sessions focused on practical demonstrations and encouraged active participation of the teachers to strengthen their ability to respond effectively to emergencies among school children. The programme concluded with a valedictory function presided over by Shashi Kumar Shetty, NSS coordinator, Nitte (Deemed to be University). In his address, he emphasized the importance of first aid knowledge among teachers in safeguarding the health and safety of students. Certificates were distributed to all the participants.

The teachers from St Agnes PU College shared positive feedback about the training programme. They expressed that each resource person provided valuable knowledge along with effective hands-on training, which would help them confidently manage emergency situations in the school setting. Overall, the programme provided valuable knowledge and practical training to teachers on first aid management during emergencies involving school children. The participants appreciated the initiative taken by Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences and stated that the training enhanced their preparedness to handle emergency situations in schools.
