Panaji, Mar 11: Sankalp Amonkar has said that coal handling operations at Mormugao Port continue to remain a serious concern for residents in his constituency.
Responding to media queries, the MLA said coal handling by two companies at the port has been a longstanding issue and that he has repeatedly raised the matter, including in the Goa Legislative Assembly.

Amonkar said that a few days ago low-grade coal was being handled at the port, and the smell from it spread across several parts of the constituency, prompting complaints from residents.
Following the complaints, authorities implemented precautionary measures and also obtained a written assurance from the company concerned, after which the smell has currently been brought under control, he said.
However, the MLA stressed that the problem has not been completely resolved.
Amonkar said the issue has been brought to the attention of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. He added that a special meeting of the local council was convened where a resolution regarding the matter was passed.
The MLA further said that a meeting with the Chief Minister has been scheduled at 4 pm tomorrow to discuss the coal handling issue and explore possible long-term solutions.
