Mumbai, Mar 9: One of the world’s largest container vessels, ‘Damietta Express’, operated by Hapag-Lloyd, has successfully berthed at the PSA Mumbai Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals (BMCT) at Jawaharlal Nehru Port, marking a major milestone for India’s maritime and logistics sector.

The ultra-large container vessel (ULCV), measuring nearly 399.9 metres in length, is among the biggest ships currently deployed on global trade routes. Its successful handling highlights the advanced infrastructure and operational capabilities of the PSA BMCT terminal.

Port officials said accommodating vessels of this scale requires precise marine planning, highly skilled personnel and seamless coordination between terminal operators, port authorities, marine pilots and tug operators.

Equipped with modern quay cranes, deep-draft berths and advanced terminal operating systems, the terminal is designed to handle next-generation mega container ships that connect major trade routes between Asia, Europe and other global markets.

Authorities noted that managing vessels close to 400 metres in length reflects the terminal’s operational strength and its readiness to support the growing demands of global shipping lines.

The successful berthing of Damietta Express also reinforces the commitment of PSA International to strengthen India’s role in international maritime trade.

With shipping companies increasingly deploying mega container vessels to achieve economies of scale, terminals like PSA BMCT at Jawaharlal Nehru Port are playing a key role in enhancing India’s port capacity and global connectivity.

Officials said the arrival of the vessel further highlights the importance of Jawaharlal Nehru Port as a major gateway for India’s containerised trade and is expected to boost confidence among global shipping lines operating along the country’s western coast.
