Kamala Harris accuses Trump of pushing US into “Unwanted War” after Iran strikes

Washington, Mar 1: Former US Vice President Kamala Harris has strongly condemned President Donald Trump following American military strikes on Iran, accusing him of steering the United States toward a conflict that lacks public support and clear justification.

In a sharply worded statement, Harris said Trump was drawing the country into what she described as “a war of choice,” arguing that American troops were being placed in harm’s way unnecessarily. She made it clear that she opposes any regime-change war in Iran, warning that such a course would endanger service members for political motives rather than national security imperatives.

Her remarks came after US forces carried out strikes on Iranian targets amid escalating regional tensions — operations that reportedly led to the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.

Harris cautioned that the conflict could come at a significant human cost. Acknowledging the risks faced by American personnel, she said she and her husband were praying for US troops conducting dangerous missions, praising their professionalism and discipline. However, she stressed that service members deserve leadership marked by steadiness and careful judgment when it comes to decisions of war and peace.

Describing the military campaign as “dangerous and unnecessary,” Harris argued that it jeopardises not only American lives but also regional stability and the country’s global standing. She rejected the notion that the strikes represented strength, instead characterising them as recklessness portrayed as resolve.

While recognising that Iran poses serious challenges and must never acquire nuclear weapons, Harris maintained that military escalation was not the right solution. She also criticised Trump’s previous claims about ending wars and dismantling Iran’s nuclear capabilities, calling them misleading.

Invoking constitutional principles, Harris pointed out that the President is required to obtain congressional authorisation before entering into war. Even if such approval were granted, she said, it would not change her view that the current military action is ill-advised and unsupported by the American public.

She concluded by urging Congress to exercise its authority to prevent deeper US involvement in the conflict, asserting that American troops, allies and citizens deserve a more measured approach.
