Los Angeles, Feb 26: Federal law enforcement officers executed court-authorised search warrants on Wednesday morning at the home and office of Alberto Carvalho, Superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), officials confirmed.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said it was serving warrants at the specified locations but declined to provide further details, noting that the affidavit supporting the searches has been sealed by the court.

“We can confirm that the FBI is serving a court-authorized warrant at those locations. However, the affidavit in support of the warrant has been sealed by the court and we, therefore, have no further comment,” the agency’s Los Angeles field office said in a statement.

Video footage showed federal agents outside Carvalho’s residence in San Pedro, about 23 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. Law enforcement sources indicated that searches were also conducted at his office at LAUSD headquarters. Authorities did not immediately confirm whether any items were seized.

The US Department of Justice confirmed that search warrants — not arrest warrants — were being executed. The U.S. Attorney’s Office stated that no arrests were made as part of the operation.

The LAUSD acknowledged “law enforcement activity” at both the superintendent’s residence and district headquarters, adding that it is cooperating with investigators.

According to the FBI, the searches in Los Angeles County were connected to another search conducted in Southwest Ranches, Florida. The FBI’s Miami field office confirmed it had searched a residence there as part of the same matter and later cleared the scene.

Carvalho, who has led the nation’s second-largest school district since February 2022, was unanimously reappointed by the school board last year. Prior to his appointment in Los Angeles, he served for 14 years as superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

Born in Portugal, Carvalho began his career as a teacher of physics, chemistry and calculus in Miami before moving into school administration. He has also been vocal on national issues, including immigration policies affecting students in his district.

As of Wednesday night, Carvalho had not responded to requests for comment. Further details about the investigation remain unclear.
