Mumbai, Feb 25: Maharashtra Ports Development Minister Nitesh Rane on Wednesday said he would request Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to shut down madrasas in the state, alleging that such institutions are “breeding grounds for terrorists.”

Speaking to reporters, Rane referred to a viral video purportedly showing a Muslim cleric beating a student. He claimed the incident was from Sawantwadi in his home district, where he also serves as district guardian minister.

“You have seen the maulavi's video of beating children. It is from Sawantwadi, my home district. You will also come to know about what strict action he is going to face soon,” Rane said. He added that strong action would be taken so that such incidents are not repeated.

Questioning the need for madrasas, the minister alleged that they serve as “epicentres of terrorism” and claimed that such institutions shape extremists. He further asked whether any Islamic country allows Hindu schools where only the Bhagavad Gita is taught, adding that religious instruction could instead take place in mosques.

Rane also alleged that weapons are sometimes found in madrasas and cited incidents of physical punishment of children as concerns. He said he would urge the Chief Minister to take steps to shut down all madrasas in the state.

Reacting sharply, Abu Azmi of the Samajwadi Party rejected the allegations and asserted that no terrorist activity takes place in madrasas in India.

“If they want, they can install CCTV cameras in madrasas. They will be given a room and food, and they can stay there and check. I can say with certainty that no such activity will be found,” Azmi said.

The remarks have triggered a fresh political controversy in Maharashtra, with sharp reactions expected from various quarters.
